Antique Kurume Kasuri Kimono Jacket XL

$350.00
sold out

This jacket is cut extra long and has longer sleeves for men and taller people, which can be worn cuffed. The armholes and sleeves are also cut wider to accommodate larger sizes.

This jacket is made from an antique Kurume Kasuri Kimono. Kurume Kasuri is a traditional technique that dates back over 200 years, and was recognized by the Japanese government as an intangible cultural heritage in 1957. The textile is Momen 木綿 or hand spun cotton.

The patterns are created from a hand weaving process called Kasuri 絣. Kasuri is a term for textiles that have been woven with threads that are dyed specifically to create patterns in the fabric as they come together in the weaving process. It requires a tremendous amount of planning as threads have to be pre-painted exactly to achieve the final pattern. It’s characterized by slightly blurred or brushed appearance, the beautiful mark of imperfections in hand-weaving. This Kimono features the Asanoha motif. 麻の葉 read “Asa no ha” means leaf of hemp. It is an ancient Japanese motif that is common in textile design, ceramics as well as woodwork such as intricate Kumiko. As hemp is a strong plant that grows quickly, Asanoha represents resilience and growth.

This jacket features two patch pockets and an extra wide collar that can be folded open for extra coverage.
